Best practices guide: how to take amazing photos and videos.

I get that content creation is not everyone’s thing so I thought I'd share some of my top tips I've learned along the way as well as some of my ALL time favourite community content for inspiration:

1. Don’t rush

If you’re panning across a completed classroom transformation, moving too fast makes it too hard to see all the wonderful elements, take it slow and carefully pan across the space. Similarly, if you’re filming an entire classroom being setup you may want to skip past some parts. You might consider filming a timelapse or filming lot’s of smaller videos to stitch together later.

2. Getting the specs right

You don’t need fancy equipment or any tricky design skills to shoot great content. Film or shoot using your phone in portrait orientation and if your phone allows it, you can always increase the quality to HD or 4K (but remember the higher the quality, the bigger the file size).

3. File size and video length

Instagram currently only lets you send reels 60 seconds or less. If your video is longer you may want to consider sending me a link to view it in dropbox or a similar program. But I recommend keeping your video length to around 30 seconds - 2 minutes in length.

4. Work out the best lighting

Using natural lighting is always a safe bet for filming light and bright content and can create beautiful visuals. If natural light isn’t an option, you may like to consider some lighting (like a cheap ring light) or just be aware of the shadows and glares your classroom lights may give off.

5. Keeping a steady hand

If your hands get shaky when trying to film (I know mine do!) I recommend setting up your phone with a tripod or something sturdy like a stack of books. Increasing the video quality will also help counteract any shakiness too.

6. Effective Transitions

The classic hand-over-the-lens trick is an oldie but a goodie when it comes to video transitions and before and after shots. If you do want to film a transition, I recommend practising what transition you want to do, filming the video in a few parts and stitching them together. There are some amazing (and free) apps that let you cut and stitch videos together. I recommend Canva, iMovie, the reels tool in Instagram or InShot (hint: InShot lets you remove the watermark if you watch a short ad).

7. To add music or not

I would LOVE to reshare the winners content on my instagram so if you decide to add music be sure it’s Royalty free. If you are unsure, I recommend not adding music to your video and instead sending me a link to an audio on Instagram (I do also have a huge library of saved audios) if you can’t decide.

8. Be mindful of what you show in your content

Some schools are very particular about what can and can’t be shown when taking photos or videos on school property so be very mindful. Content should NEVER feature any personal information about you, the school you teach at or your students. Please take care when filming.
